[book] In the Wake of the Goddesses: Women, Culture, and the Biblical Transformation of Pagan by Tikvah Frymer-Kensky. The Free Press, 1992.

Being used by University of Pennsylvania Jewish Studies 113, Lady Wisdom, Wisdom Personified, Sigrid Peterson, PhD.

This is a course on Lady Wisdom (Hebrew Hokhma; Greek Sophia). It is a prominent religious figure in the ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern world that gave rise to Christianity, to Rabbinic Judaism, and to Islam. Or, Lady Wisdom is an extremely obscure religious figure who has been ignored for good and substantial reasons. The course will discuss this contradiction between the reception and the textual prominence of Lady Wisdom as personification. It will examine, in this course, the texts that delineate the personification of Lady Wisdom found in Jewish and Christian Scriptures, the works of Philo Judaeus, and the "pseudepigraphical" texts that become her literature, often named after Solomon. It will look at the specifics of her literary genres, including Wisdom sayings(Q), and their pervasiveness in Judaism and Christianity. It will also compare and contrast the figures of Lady Wisdom, Dame Folly, Torah personified, Nous (Mind), and the Logo s (Word), particularly as the latter occurs in the hymnic opening of the Gospel of John.

[book] From Jerusalem to the Edge of Heaven: Meditations on the Soul of Israel by Ari Elon, Tikva Frymer-Kensky (Translator)

This debut by Elon, director of the Rabbinic Texts Program at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, is a haunting mixture of modes and voices. Originally published as a special issue of the Israeli journal Shdemot (run by a unique group of left-wing kibbutz members involved in Jewish textual study), Elon's work is the product of a complex background. He was raised in an Orthodox family but embraced secular Zionism as an adult. He served in the Israeli army during the Intifada. And he is involved in an ambitious revisionist study of traditional religious texts. An innovative combination of autobiography, fiction, talmudic commentary and reflections on modern Jewish and Israeli identity, this text is made even more prophetic and timely by the current events in Israel. The book was originally published in Israel as "Alma Dee," where it was a huge and controversial success.
